Abdullah Dwdari
Resilience, Growth, and Dreams.
“All I remember from my trip from Idlib to Turkiye is the car ride. I was only eight years old when I left home.”
These words encapsulate the beginning of Abdullah Dwidari’s extraordinary journey. Now 17 years old, Abdullah is a Karam House graduate whose life story has been transformed by resilience, determination, and the support of a community that fosters personal growth and learning.
Abdullah’s family made the difficult decision to leave Idlib, Syria, and seek refuge in Turkiye. This marked the start of a new chapter in their lives, filled with challenges, hope, and dreams of a brighter future. Abdullah vividly recalls the car ride. Little did he know then that he would soon embark on a different kind of journey at Karam House, a journey of self-discovery and growth.
In September 2020, Abdullah became part of the Karam House community, where he took on a transformative learning experience. Over the course of two years, he completed 12 studios, each offering him the opportunity to explore new skills, broaden his horizons, and connect with like-minded refugee youth.
Upon arriving in Turkiye, Abdullah was enrolled in a Syrian school to help his family establish a sense of belonging. He initially spoke only Arabic, but at 14, he made the necessary decision to learn Turkish. For his 9th grade, his parents enrolled him in a Turkish school. Adjusting to this new environment was far from easy, but Abdullah’s determination and resolve were unwavering. He knew that challenges were merely stepping stones on his path to success.
At Karam House, Abdullah’s horizons continued to expand. He is currently preparing for his YOS exam—the Turkish equivalent to SATs— and contemplating a major in the design and development of digital games. As he reflects on his journey, he acknowledges that his career aspirations may evolve, but Karam House has provided him with the clarity and self-awareness needed to make informed decisions about his future.
Abdullah’s journey at Karam House was influenced by friends already in the program. The idea of a community space where he could learn and make friends resonated with him, drawing him further into this transformative experience.
Throughout his time in the program, Abdullah demonstrated exceptional skills and a sophisticated understanding of critical feedback. His ability to learn using new tools and techniques, coupled with his attention to detail and accuracy in project execution, set him apart. Abdullah’s discipline, focus, and composure made him a valuable asset to any team he worked with, even in the face of challenges. According to Feras, Karam House Site Manager, these qualities are some of Abdullah’s best attributes.
One of Abdullah’s most cherished studios at Karam House was Mini Functional Arms. In this studio, he designed the “Wall Arm,” a mechanical device to clean windows. He was involved in every step of the project, from conceptualization and technical plans to 3D modeling and fabrication. This project allowed him to develop his digital fabrication skills and hone his abilities in oral presentation. The end result was a practical and effective product born from his creativity and dedication.
Karam House has not only developed Abdullah’s technical skills but also transformed his self-confidence. He once struggled with shyness and anxiety to the point where speaking in front of others seemed impossible. Now, he proudly presents his projects to his peers and mentors, a testament to his growth and personal development.
Abdullah’s journey with Karam House approached its conclusion, but his connection to this community remains strong. He frequently returns to participate in activities like chess and volunteers, giving back to the place that has given him so much.
As he prepares to step out into the world, Abdullah’s message is simple but profound: “If you only have a few free hours in the day, make use of them. Learn something new.” He is currently dedicating his free time to learning English and aspiring to learn German in the future. His ultimate dream is to travel to Europe after completing college.
Abdullah’s journey is a remarkable testament to the power of determination, community, and learning. It’s a story of transformation from a young boy who left his home with only the memory of a car ride to a confident and ambitious young man with a bright future ahead. Karam House has played a pivotal role in Abdullah’s transformation, equipping him with the skills, confidence, and vision for a promising future. As he embarks on the next chapter of his life, his journey inspires all who face challenges and seek personal growth. Abdullah’s message resonates with all of us: seize every opportunity to learn, grow, and shape your own path to success.
