From Student to Volunteer: Nurturing the Next Generation at Karam House
November 15, 2023Five years ago, I stepped into a world of endless opportunities and personal growth when I joined Karam House. My name is Yazan Harb, and I am here to take you through my journey from being a Karam House student to becoming a Karam House volunteer.
Virtual Graduation
Two years ago, amidst the pandemic, I graduated from Karam House. It was a bittersweet moment, as my graduation ceremony had to be held online due to the circumstances. The sadness of leaving the place that had become a second home to me was palpable. However, it was also a time of great happiness because this farewell marked the beginning of a new chapter in my life.
The emotions were conflicting, but I knew that the knowledge, skills, and confidence I gained while at Karam House had prepared me for whatever lay ahead. I was ready to embrace new challenges and seize the opportunities life had in store for me.
Returning as a Volunteer
Fast forward to today, and I find myself back at Karam House, not as a student, but as a volunteer. This year’s graduation is particularly special to me because I wanted to be here to help and share the same feelings I experienced when I graduated two years ago. The anticipation in the air, the sense of accomplishment, and the excitement of what the future holds for these young leaders are all too familiar to me.
My decision to return as a volunteer was driven by the inspiration I drew from those who selflessly gave their time and expertise when I was a student at Karam House. They played a pivotal role in shaping my journey and empowering me to reach my fullest potential. Now, I want to pass on that same sense of inspiration to the next generation of Karam House graduates.
Witnessing the Celebration of Accomplishments
As I stand here today, I can’t help but feel a surge of pride and joy. Witnessing this celebration of accomplishments as students step into the world as confident and capable leaders is truly heartwarming. It’s a reminder of the power of education and mentorship to transform lives and communities.
The unity, empowerment, and hope at Karam House are as strong as ever. It’s a testament to the remarkable work done here and the incredible volunteers who dedicate their time to make all of this possible.
The experiences, skills, and confidence I gained during my time as a student at Karam House have not only shaped my future but have also inspired me to give back. I returned as a volunteer to share the excitement, joy, and achievement of the next generation of Karam House graduates.
I’m honored to be a part of this incredible community and help create a brighter future for young refugee leaders.
