Karam House Sends Amal off on Her Journey
July 26, 2021The path that refugees take, the moment they leave their destroyed homes, to wherever their feet lead them, is long and tiring. And even though people around the world know that the rocky roads or dangerous boat rides that the refugees take are dangerous, they do not understand the pain and suffering that comes along with it.
To help others understand this journey, a production company by the name of Good Chance, built a 3.5 meter-tall puppet representing a nine-year old refugee girl—Amal—on her journey to find her mother whom she lost during her escape from the Syrian conflict.
Amal will take the path most Syrian refugees have taken before her.Her Journey will begin in Turkey continuing to Greece, Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, and finally the UK. The purpose of this journey is to focus attention on the urgent needs of young refugees.
Little Amal will travel 8,000 kilometers, eight countries, and make around 70 stops. Events welcoming and helping Amal will be held all over the world, starting with an event in Gaziantep in Turkey sending Amal off, and ending in Manchester where Amal finally arrives to begin her even bigger journey which is building a new home in this new place.
The team at Karam House have been working all summer long on studios with the Leaders to create a suitcase for Amal containing everything they think she might need on her journey.
The suitcase will carry projects made by Karam’s students including:
- Amal’s theater: Short plays written and designed by the students in which they envision Amal’s journey.
- Automata: The students made automata of themselves, recorded a GIF, and created a map of their personal journey, the one similar to Amal’s in which they tell their story. These projects explain where they came from, how their journey was, and where they want to be in the future.
- Identity Vessel: The students created objects that are a representation of their identity, fully encapsulated in a vessel that they made by hand, as well.
- Gamifying The Walk: In this studio, the students worked on projects that gamified their journey while imagining the obstacles they might face, and imagining their life after The Walk.
Amal’s walk begins tomorrow on July 27th, when the students of Karam House will travel with the team from Istanbul and Reyhanli to Gazientap to meet Amal and hand her the suitcase and send her off with well wishes, in hope that she will carry their stories and their hope for a better future for refugees.
When night descends in Gaziantep, and Amal carries her suitcase from Karam House, the road will be dark and scary. Therefore, the team and students at Karam created lanterns to light the way and guide her to her next destination.
