Nasser Al Rayess: Bringing Arab Culture to the front of the Stage—One Laugh at a Time

For Syrian American comedian Nasser Al Rayess, comedy is not just entertainment; it’s a form of healing and a way to connect with people. Born to Syrian parents who left Syria in the ’90s, Nasser was born and raised in California, but his connection to his Syrian roots never got disconnected; he carries his heritage with him on every stage he performs, every joke he delivers, and every bite of Shawarma he takes. The last time Nasser was in Syria was when he was three years old, and just like many, he dreams of visiting one day now that Syria is liberated.

Nasser gained his popularity as the self-proclaimed “Shawarma King,” trying different shawarma sandwiches all over the world and sharing hilarious and relatable stories of the Arab American experience. Nasser’s comedy resonates deeply with so many underrepresented audiences who rarely see their lives reflected in the media. But his mission goes beyond making people laugh; he’s working to revolutionize Arab American comedy and bringing Syrian voices forward.

“I want to make Arab culture mainstream…we’ve already been pushed away too much. It’s time to bring our culture to the forefront and say, ‘You like it? Amazing. You don’t? Then move to the side,” Nasser told The New Arab.

For him, it is very important to bring Syrian voices to places where there is little to no representation. He wants these voices to be heard in an industry where Middle Eastern voices are often overlooked or silenced. Nasser is doing this unapologetically, and in his own way, he is embracing his identity and pushing back against stereotypes with humor and authenticity.

However, Nasser’s impact does not stop at comedy, even tho that is the center of his career. This Ramadan, he is combining laughter with action. Partnering with Karam, Nasser is using his platform to support displaced Syrians inside and outside Syria. He’s supporting Syrians who dream of one day returning home like him. “Until then, I want to do everything I can to help them rebuild their futures,” he says.

Unlike many other organizations, Karam doesn’t only provide immediate aid, it invests in education, mentorship, and sustainable opportunities for Syrians so they can one day go back and rebuild their homes and lives with joy and dignity. For Nasser, this work is important because he knows the power of storytelling, the strength of community, and the resilience of the Syrian people. This is not the first time Nasser has done something like this for his community, last year, he supported efforts in Gaza, and this year, he chose Syria. And now, he’s inviting you all to join him in making a difference.

Community, coming together, sharing stories and laughter come together this Ramadan. Through comedy, Nasser has given Syrians a voice. And now he’s using that voice to bring home to the voiceless, or those who are not being heard, and those who need it most.
