Once upon a time…

These magic words open up a world of possibilities that reaches the hearts of children, friends, or the general public. We are all storytellers and have great ones to tell. It takes choosing the right story to attract, touch, and engage an audience. 

Stories transcend time, create human connections, make the world easier to understand, and influence our ability to make decisions. Storytelling allows you to simplify your message, explain complex ideas, humanize your speech, and above all, engage your audience.

The question remains: Why does storytelling have this magic?

Let me tell you a story that happened in May of 2018, as my work as an Innovative Education Mentor at Karam House began. The first session of a workshop titled “Identity Vessels” started with this proposition:

Our lives are events, stories, and experiences, full of joys and sorrows, rich in feelings and fluctuations, and today what we have gone through has become memories and moments that live in us. These memories are what formed our current identity and who we are!

Think about a poignant memory that has shaped you and/or your understanding of your identity (or who you are); a memory that has had the greatest impact on your current identity and who you are today.

The students raised their hands to share their moments and memories until it came to Wissam. Wissam was  a 14-year-old boy, one of the newcomers to the Innovative Education workshops, and, by nature, a very shy person. He had difficulty pronouncing a complete sentence without confusion. “Wissam, it’s your turn.” I saw his face turning red and his eyes turning away.

He answered in a low voice: “I don’t know.”

With a smile I said, “Wissam try to remember.”

I felt his stress rise with my question when he said: “We Syrians do not have an identity.”

For a moment, I felt that time stopped. Silence fell on everyone present. I said, “Okay, Wissam. Let’s leave the answer to this question for now, and let’s do this activity, and I am confident that you will find an answer to my question after we finish it.”

We started working on an activity called The Tree of Life. After everyone finished their work, I asked the same opening question to Wissam again.

Let’s pause here for a moment. I know how annoying it is to pause while telling a story, and I guess you are wondering what happened next, but before I continue with my story, I want to ask you, my dear reader: Have you thought of what your answer would be? What memory has had the greatest impact on your current identity and who you are today? Did you feel sorry for Wissam? If you did, you are a normal human being who has experienced part of the magic of storytelling by your brain secreting “oxytocin”, which is the hormone of empathy and love.

When we listen to a well-told story, many hormones are activated in our brain in response to the nature of this story, the most important of which are dopamine, known as the hormone of satisfaction and happiness; oxytocin, which is the empathy hormone; and endorphin, the hormone associated with relaxation.

Now, back to my story. Wissam shared with us a set of his happiest memories, and he not only completed the workshop, but he was one of the most confident and creative participants that I worked with during the past year. He is currently one of the most prominent writers in Bassmatna newspaper, and as a 2022 Karam House graduate, he is preparing to join the Faculty of Mechatronic Engineering to pursue his passion.

Our lives are full of stories, and we all have stories that have an impact on our lives.

In the world of movies and series, we often unconsciously like characters based on how strong the movie story was. For example, the 2019 film Joker, showed us the power of story and narration in influencing the feelings and emotions of the viewers: most sympathized with the Joker character despite the crimes he committed.

Storytelling is one of the most useful skills today. Telling stories is an effective method to influence others, and you must have noticed that the narrative style is more attractive than any other speaking style. In fact, your focus and interest increase when you hear a story.

Teachers use storytelling to help their students better understand their lessons, motivational speakers do not hesitate to tell stories of success and failure to persuade listeners, comedians use storytelling to make us laugh, corporate marketers use it to increase sales, and politicians use it to gain more power.

A recent study proved that the most powerful people — those with the most influence on the masses — are those who master telling stories. So how do you become a great storyteller?

You can start with these three important steps:

Presetting:

At this stage, you prepare the listener to enter the scene of the story. You give them enough details about what you are talking about so that they can understand your speech later. It’s like the cover of a magazine or a book. If you don’t have a proper cover and a properly prepared design, people won’t choose the book or read your story. The story may also seem off-topic, and people may consider you scattered or disorganized if you do not prepare them properly for your story.

Content:

Here, you get to the core of the story. You describe the sequential events. Be sure not to spend a lot of time giving unimportant details because people will lose focus and interest in hearing the story. How do you check it? Here are some good tips:

• Let the story be simple and short without any complications
• Ignore any information or events will not leave a gap in the story
• Ignore any information that can be difficult to understand and or takes too much time to explain
• Target the stimulus of excitement and suspense, arouse curiosity, interest, and desire to continue
• Choose interesting story content
• Let the listeners react to you with their feelings and expectations
• Be sure the events of the story are extraordinary
• Use your imagination and open the way for creativity in describing events with perfect suspense

The Resolution:

Here, you resolve all that excitement and suspense by creating an exciting ending that deserves to be heard. Comedies end with a funny sentence, didactic stories end with a conclusion — you must choose a resolution that is appropriate for your story. Otherwise all the focus that the audience has made will be wasted because they will not understand the general meaning of the story. In fact, they probably won’t know until you’ve already finished your story.

Storytelling is carved into the molecules of our DNA. It is one of the flavors in our lives as human beings that makes our past intimate, our present enjoyable, and our future full of contemplation, and as Jonathan Gottschall says:

“We are, as a species, addicted to story. Even when the body goes to sleep, the mind stays up all night, telling itself stories.” We, humans, love stories because they are a way to help us transport ourselves through this world in ways that reality cannot.

 

في يوم من الأيام…

تفتح هذه الكلمات السحرية القليلة عالمًا غير عادي من الاحتمالات. عندما نرغب في الوصول إلى قلوب أبناءنا , أصدقائنا ,جماهيرنا أو حتى عامة الناس ..

نحن جميعًا رواة قصص ولدينا جميعًا قصة رائعة نرويها. لا يتطلب الأمر سوى اختيار القصة المناسبة لجذب جمهورنا ولمسه واشراكه. تتخطى القصص الزمن وتخلق روابط بشرية وتسهل فهم عالمنا وتؤثر على قدرتنا على اتخاذ القرارات. حيث أن سرد القصص يتيح لك تبسيط رسالتك ، وشرح الأفكار المعقدة ، وإضفاء الطابع الإنساني على كلامك ، وقبل كل شيء إشراك جمهورك.

ويبقى السؤال هنا ؟ لماذا تمتلك رواية القصص كل هذا السحر …

حسنا دعني أولا أخبرك هذه القصة التي حدثت في شهر أيار من العام 2018  ومع بداية عملي كمشرف للتعليم المبتكر في بيت كرم و في الجلسة الأولى من ورشة كانت بعنوان “سفن الهوية” .حيث بدأت بهذا السؤال:

حياتنا أحداث وقصص و تجارب, مليئة بالأفراح والأحزان , غنية بالمشاعر والتقلبات واليوم أصبح ما مررنا به ذكريات تعيش فينا , وتسكن داخلنا و هذه الذكريات هي التي شكلت هويتنا الحالية, وما نحن عليه اليوم!!

ما هي الذكرى التي كان لها أثر كبير على هويتك الحالية ومن أنت عليه اليوم ؟؟

ارتفعت أيدي المشاركين و تعددت الذكريات وتنوعت الإجابات حتى وصل الدور إلى وسام, وسام ذو الـ 14 عاما كان أحد المنضمين حديثا إلى ورشات التعليم المبتكر, سام كان شديد الخجل ويصعب عليه نطق جملة كاملة دون ارتباك ..

قلت له : وسام جاء دورك ..

رأيت وجهه يزداد احمرارا و عيناه تتجهان بعيدا … وقال بصوت خافت : لا أعلم

ابتسمت وقلت له وسام حاول أو تتذكر … شعرت بزيادة توتره مع سؤالي عندما قال : نحن السوريون لا نملك هوية …

شعرت للحظات بأن الزمن قد توقف مع نهاية ما قاله و خيم السكون على جميع الحاضرين ..

قلت له حسنا وسام لنترك الاجابة على هذا السؤال الآن .. ولنقم بعمل هذا التمرين التالي وأنا على ثقة بأنك ستجد جوابا على سؤالي بعد إنجازه , وبدأت بالعمل على تمرين يسمى (شجرة الحياة) و بعد انتهاء الجميع من اتمامه أعدت السؤال مرة أخرى …

اعرف كم يصعب التوقف عن سرد القصة واعرف انك تتسائل عن ماذا حدث لاحقا و لكن قبل ان اتابع قصتي أريد أن أسألك أنت:

هل فكرت في نفسك عن إجابة سؤالي ؟ عن تلك الذكرى المهمة في حياتك أنت والتي كان لها أثر كبير في تكوين شخصيتك وهويتك الحالية ؟

هل شعرت بالأسى على وسام ,إذا كنت قد فعلت فأنت إنسان طبيعي وقد اختبرت جزءا من سحر القصص بإفراز دماغك لهرمون ” الأوكسيتوسين ” وهو هرمون التعاطف والحب.

أننا عندما نستمع لقصة مروية جيدًا، يتم تنشيط العديد من الهرمونات في دماغنا تفاعلا مع طبيعة هذه القصة و أهمها الـ دوبامين والمعروف بهرمون الرضا والسعادة والأوكسيتوسين و هو هرمون التعاطف و الإندورفين وهو الهرمون المرتبط بالاسترخاء.

والآن وبالعودة إلى قصة وسام ذلك الشاب الخجول, فقد شاركنا بمجموعة من ذكرياته السعيدة و لم ينهي تلك الورشة بنجاح فقط بل كان من أكثر المشاركين الذي عملت معهم ثقة و ابداعا خلال سنوات عملي, وهو حاليا من أبرز الكتاب في صحيفة بصمتنا, واليوم بصفته خريجا للعام 2022 في بيت كرم يستعد وسام ,لدخول هندسة الميكاترونيك ليتابع شغفه.

حياتنا مليئة بالحكايات والقصص، وكل شخص لديه قصته المختلفة عن غيره، وقوة سرد القصص لها تأثير على حياتنا العملية والخاصة, في عالم الأفلام والمسلسلات كثيراً ما نتعلق بالشخصيات بناء على القصة و على سبيل المثال: فيلم الجوكر 2019 بين لنا قوة القصة وسردها في التأثير على مشاعر الآخرين وعواطفهم لدرجة أن الناس تعاطفت مع الجوكر بالرغم من كل الجرائم التي ارتكبها.

ويعد سرد القصص من أكثر المهارات فائدة في زمننا الحالي. حيث تعتبر القصص وسيلة فعالة للتأثير على المستمعين واستهداف إقناعهم بفكرة معينة وإذا لم تلاحظ أن الأسلوب القصصي أكثر جاذبية من أي أسلوب تحدث آخر. فالحقيقة إن نسبة تركيزك واهتمامك تزداد وتعلو عند سماعك للقصة.

يستعمل المعلمون سرد القصص من أجل مساعدة تلاميذهم على فهم الدرس جيدا. محدثوا التحفيز لا يتوانون عن سرد قصص النجاح و الفشل من أجل التأثير في المستمعين. الكوميديون يستعملون سرد القصة لاضحاكنا. مسوقوا الشركات يستعملونها لزيادة مبيعاتها. والسياسيون يستعملونها للحصول على القوة.

دراسة حديثة أثبتت أن أكثر الناس شهرة هذه الأيام وأهمية هم ناس يجيدون فن سرد القصص و أكثرهم تأثيرا على الجماهير. إذا كيف يمكنك أن تصبح راوي قصص رائع؟

أنت بحاجة إلى احتراف ثلاثة خطوات مهمة :

الإعداد المسبق :

فهذه المرحلة عليك تجهيز المستمع للدخول في مشهد القصة حيث تعطيه تفاصيل كافية عن ما تتحدث عنه ليتمكن من استيعاب حديثك فيما بعد. يشبه الأمر غلاف مجلة أو كتاب إذا لم يكن لديك غلاف مناسب و تصميم معد اعداد صحيح فإن الناس لن تستمع بانتباه الى قصتك و لن يختاروا الكتاب. إن القصة قد تبدو خارجة عن الموضوع و قد يعتبرك الناس أنك مبعثر أو غير منظم إن لم تعدهم إعدادا صحيحا للقصة خاصتك

المحتوى

هنا تصل إلى أساس القصة و لبها حيث تبدأ في وصف الأحداث المتسلسلة و لكن استغراقك وقتا كبيرا في إعطاء تفاصيل غير مهمة يكون لصالحك. الناس ستفقد تركيزها و يقل اهتمامها لسماع القصة. فلا تجعل نفسك من الأشخاص الذين يستمرون في التحدث مرارا و تكرارا دون كلل و ملل لوقت طويل. كيف تحقق ذلك؟ إليك بعض النصائح المهمة

• فلتكن القصة بسيطة و قصيرة خالية من أي تعقيدات
• تجاهل أي معلومات أو أحداث لن ترك ثغرة في القصة
• تجاهل أي معلومة ممكن أن تكون صعبة الفهم و أو تستغرق وقتا أكبر من اللازم لشرحها
• استهدف حافز الإثارة و التشويق. إثارة الفضول، الاهتمام، الرغبة في الاستمرار
• اختيار محتوى قصة مثير للاهتمام و مشوق
• دع المستمعين يتفاعلون معك بمشاعرهم و توقعاتهم.
• على أحداث القصة أن تكون خارقة للعادة و ليست رتيبة عادية.
• استعمل خيالك و افتح المجال للإبداع في وصف الأحداث بتشويق مثالي .

الحل

هنا تقوم بحل كل تلك الإثارة و التشويق الذين شحنتهما في المستمعين لتخرج لهم بنهاية مثيرة استحقت الانتظار و الاستماع. لذلك القصص الكوميدية تنتهي بجملة مضحكة. القصص التعليمية تنتهي باستنتاج. و هكذا يجب اختيار حل مناسب بالفعل لقصتك و الا فإنا كل التركيز الذي بذله الجمهور سيذهب هباءا لأنهم لن يستوعبوا المغزى العام من القصة. ربما لن يعرفوا حتى نك أنهيت قصتك بالفعل.

السرد القصصي منحوت ضمن جزئيات حمضنا النووي. هي أحد المنكهات في حياتنا كبشر التي تجعل ماضينا حميمي وحاضرنا ممتع ومستقبلنا مليء بالتأملات، وكما يقول الباحث جوناثان غوتشل

“نحن كائنات مدمنة على تلقي القصص وسردها، حتى عندما يذهب جسمنا للنوم يبقى العقل مستيقظاً طوال الليل يسرد لنا قصصاًَ في أحلامنا.”

أننا نحن البشر نحب القصص لأنها وسيلة تساعدنا على نقل أنفسنا عبر هذا العالم بطرق لا يمكن للواقع فعلها,
